Exciting Times for the MSSIG!

These past few months have been an exciting time for the Marketing & Sales SIG.

In April, the MetSIG's 2008 Global Online Congress, in which we actively participated, was a great success for them, and for our members. Please review those archived webinars if you didn't get a chance to catch the live events. Also, If you haven't yet bought Steve Rollins' "Project Portfolio and the PMO", we strongly encourage you to do so. As the MetSIG's Chair, Steve has made some amazing contributions to both his SIG and to the industry as a whole.

May was particularly eventful in that we elected three new members to our board. I'd therefore, like to take this opportunity to welcome these fine additions to our team. I know their volunteer contributions will be greatly appreciated and immediately felt by all. May also marked the beginning of our new website launch, which should be fully functional, tweaked and completed by the beginning of June.

And finally, please be sure to complete our online survey about "Marketing Operations and the PMO." There's growing evidence that the principles of project, program and portfolio management are merging with marketing operations to form a "new improved" PMO, but we'd like to hear from our membership, directly, about this fascinating trend before jumping to any conclusions. At the end of the survey is an opportunity for "comments" which we strongly encourage - negative or positive.

On behalf of our growing board and membership, I thank you for your valuable attention and continued support!

Dave Hutchinson, PMP
Chair, MSSIG

Marketing Operations and the PMO – A Survey

Earlier this month, Wal-Mart reached out to the MSSIG in search of Project Management Professionals (PMPs) with marketing experience. Kelley Troia, the Director of Marketing Operations at Wal-Mart, was the one who contacted us since “it was so hard finding” these PMPs. Naturally, we were all too happy to help. View the Job Alert.

For many of us, this was a total vindication of our SIG’s position that the heretofore separate worlds of marketing and project management can and must come together in an effort to “align” the enterprise around customers - and as it now appears - under the emerging disciplines of Marketing Operations. Dave Hutchinson has even gone so far as to suggest that the PMO should be rebranded as the “Performance Marketing Office” to help accelerate this inevitable and overdue merger between strategy and execution. See Rebranding the PMO.

The MSSIG has designed a survey to help gauge our members’ interest and opinions on the topic of Marketing Operations and how it relates to the field of applied project management.
